It was purchased at the Christie’s sale of the Michael Roberts collection, at Ashurst, Kent, U.K. Roberts was one of the early afficionados of architectural elements and ornament and he collected and dealt in this material for 20 years. The important inventory he amassed was sold by Christie’s in September 2004. Salander-O’Reilly spent in excess of 1 million dollars at this sale, and purchased over 120 lots.
